She was 27 centimetres high and weighed 450 grams. She should have been born next month but she already was four months ago. When Liliana's mother saw her for the first time, she was afraid. "The doctor said that such little children usually die after four days," said Magdalena, Liliana's mom. Today, the girl weighs already over three kilograms, she's feeling fine so her mother is taking her girl home.
Doctors say it's a miracle. Liliana was born on 13th of February in the 22nd week of her mom's pregnancy. Such early births are referred to as "beyond survival chances".
The girl was born in a hospital in Gryfino. She was urgently transported to "Zdroje" hospital in Szczecin, to the Pathology and Newborns Intensive Therapy Ward.
"I was coming here everyday by bus. I guess all the passengers must have heard me crying everyday. I was crying myself out before and after the visits, so I could smile while I was here," said Magdalena, Liliana's mom.
Only after three months she was able to pick her child up. When she touched then, she felt that it will be all right.
"She was so tiny, I didn't even know how to grab her," she recalled.
"16 weeks"
Doctors fought for the girl's life for 16 weeks. Now, after the hospitalisation, Liliana will be able to finally go home, to Gryfino. She will meet her brother, Dominik, who is awaiting his little sister.
On Thursday, the hospital management organised a conference at which the staff said goodbye to Liliana.
"We're trying our best to provide our patients with the best professionals and excellent equipment, so miracles like this one could happen," said Łukasz Tyszler, the director of "Zdroje" hospital in Szczecin.
"I call a miracle because usually children born before the 23rd week have practically zero chances to recover in full health. It happens very rarely. I'm happy that we made it," he added.
As a farewell gift, the director gave Liliana's mom and grandma a statuette and a letter which they will read out to the girl when she grows up.
