A Wrocław court sentenced four police officers on Friday for 2 and 2.5 years in prison. The officers were accused of ovestepping authority and torturing Igor Stachowiak, who had died at a precinct in Wrocław in May 2016.
Four former police officers were sat in the dock of Wrocław court on Friday. They were on duty the night Igor Stachowiak died at the Stare Miasto police station in Wrocław. Łukasz R., Paweł G., Paweł P. and Adam W. were accused of overstepping authority and torturing a person under custody. The prosecution decided, however, that "comprehensively collected evidence did not provide sufficient grounds to charge the former officers with involuntary manslaughter".
On Friday, the court found all of the accused guilty of crimes they were charged with. The longest sentence of 2.5 years in prison was served to Łukasz R. who is believed to use taser on Stachowiak three times. The remaining three officers were sentenced for 2 years in prison.
Igor Stachowiak died in May 2016 after being detained and taken to Stare Miasto police station in Wrocław. According to the pathologists, the cause of death was cardiorespiratory failure. Medical expert witnesses confirmed the cause of death before the court. They testified that Stachowiak was under influence of drugs and was tasered multiple times, which combined led to cardiorespiratory failure.
