I hope that the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency and air traffic controllers trade union will reach an agreement by 10 a.m. on Friday. Otherwise we should expect that many flights will get cancelled - Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority Piotr Samson said on Thursday.
"I'd like to apologise passengers for inconveniences which have been already occuring and for even worse inconveniences that may potentially occur after May 1. Please accept my apologies," Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority (ULC) Piotr Samson said on Thursday at a session of the parliamentary permanent subcommittee on air transport.
The ULC chief assured that when it comes to air safety, the passengers had nothing to worry about. "Everything is running safely, and will continue so. However, as we will have less controllers, less planes will be carrying flighs," he explained.
Samson also said that Eurocontrol, that is the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, would issue a decision on Friday morning regarding further functioning of Polish airspace.
"The EU Commission and Eurocontrol cannot wait any longer. Tomorrow at 10 a.m., a decision on the so-called massive cancellation process will be made," Samson added. He explained that Eurocontrol "might decide to place some areas of our country's airspace under supervision of other air traffic agencies". He added, however: "we would like to avoid that, it's not a good solution for Poland".
"I hope an agreement (between the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency and the air traffic controllers trade union) will be reached by 10 a.m. tomorrow. Otherwise we should expect a lot of cancellations when it comes to flights, and not only those to and from Poland, but also plenty of flights in other parts of Europe, especially the north-south arrangement," he said.
