The police in Pajęczno (Łódzkie voivodeship) have detained a 49-year-old man who, while intoxicated, drove into the town in a T-55 tank. He is facing two years in prison for driving under influence and even up to 8 years for creating risk of road traffic disaster.
According to Joanna Kącka from Voivodeship Police Headquarters in Łódź, the incident took place on Thursday evening. The detained man was sobering up in police detention ward and the tank was towed to a guarded parking lot.
The police say that at 9.40 pm they were notified about a tank moving along one of the main streets of the town.
We dispatched a patrol to Mickiewicza street area. The officers saw a T-55 tank parked in the street and a man standing next to it. According to initial findings, the man was riding inside the tank as a passenger. Soon after, the officers located the 49-year-old owner of the vehicle. The man was under the influence of alcohol," Kącka said.
The owner of the rare vehicle was taken to the police detention ward. In order to remove the tank from the street, the police used the help of a former soldier who had necessary qualifications to operate such machines. At the expense of the owner, the T-55 was towed to guarded parking lot.
The police determined that initially the tank was being transported on a platform trailer which broke down. The tank was taken off it for the repair time. When the platform was ready again, the tank's owner, together with a passenger, decided to take a ride through the steets of Pajeczno, despite the vehicle being insured and himself lacking permission to operate such machines.
The man will be questioned and charged right after he's sobered up. He is facing two years in prison for driving under influence and even up to 8 years for creating risk of road traffic disaster.
