Poland has detained another suspected member of a Russian spy network, bringing the total number of people detained as part of an investigation to 16, Interior Minister and Special Services Coordinator Mariusz Kamiński said on Friday (August 4).
"(The Internal Security Agency) detained another, already sixteenth person suspected of participating in a Russian spy network," Kamiński wrote on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
"Belarusian Mikhail A. took part in reconnaissance of military facilities and ports. He also carried out propaganda activities for Russia. He was taken into custody."
The Office of the Special Services Coordinator reminded that earlier on 15 people had been detained in connection to this case. All have been placed under arrest by court decision.
"The intensive operations by the ABW have led to the identification of a sabotage and diversion spy network," the office added.
According to the ABW, the group was tasked with conducting military facilities and critical infrastructure reconnaissance, and monitoring and documenting humanitarian and military aid transports for Ukraine. The network is also said to have been preparing to derail trains with aid for Ukraine, setting fire to property and cars as well as criminal battery.
The group members are also suspected of propaganda activities aimed at inciting animosity in Poland against the Ukrainian people as well as reluctance in Poles to offer support to Ukraine.
According to the agency, the case is dynamic and still developing.
"The ABW continues efforts aimed at determining details regarding the spy network as well as identifying all persons involved. Further arrests are possible."
