The 39-year-old Adam K. partner to the child's mother and the child's father was charged with causing grevious bodily harm in the form of heavy bruises that may lead to the child's death.
"For this crime the suspect will be facing up to 15 years in prison. Questioned as a suspect, Adam K. pleaded not guilty of the charges pressed against him," said the spokesman of the District Prosecutor's Office in Koszalin, Ryszard Gąsiorowski.
The prosecutor's office will authority to place the suspect under temporary arrest.
A few hours earlier, the 23-year-old mother was charged with exposing her child to a direct risk of death or bodily harm. She is facing up to 5 years behind bars. Gąsiorowski explained that ground for charging the woman is the fact that when she had decided to leave the flat with her older daughter, a friend of her partner was already in there and was drinking high-volume alcohol. "She knew very well that they were drinking vodka and still left her two-month-old child behind," he added.
Unconscious
The two-month-old girl from Darłowo was transported by air ambulance to the hospital on Tuesday evening. The child was admitted to the children intensive care ward.
On Wednesday the hospital notified the police that the child might have been beaten as the sustained injuries seemed to suggest such scenario.
"Inquiry is ongoing under the supervision of the prosecutor's office. Arrests were made. In order not to prejudice the investigation I cannot say more at this point," press officer from police in Sławno, Kinga Warczak said on Thursday.
The father is said to have called the emergency service after finding out the child wasn't reacting to external stimuli and was unconscious. He is to have said that the child slipped out of his hands.
