Between 27 April and 6 May there have been 850 road accidents that took lives of 72 people and left 1081 injured. The police apprehended 3582 drunk drivers, according to the official statement issued by the Police Headquarters.
On Friday, 27 April, the police launched the „Safe weekend” operation aimed mainly at road checks and accident prevention during the long spring break. The operation lasted until Sunday evening, 6 May. The police focused mainly on exit routes around the largest cities where most of the incidents happened. The road checks were aimed mainly against speeding and drunk drivers.
On Sunday, the last day of the spring break, the highest number of patrols were dispatched. More than 5.000 road police officers were on field duty.
"Sunday was most tragic"
As Deputy Commissioner, Robert Opas from Police Headquarters informed, between 27 April and 6 May the police recorded 850 accidents that took lives of 72 people and left 1081 injured. 3582 drunk drivers were apprehended.
"The last 24 hours were most tragic as 11 people have died," explained junior officer Opas. On the last day of the spring break, 104 accidents were recorded and 284 drunk drivers have been detained.
The police cautions that although operation "Safe weekend" is already over, there will still be increased number of road checks around the country.
"We expect that many people will be returning from holidays also on Monday," added officer Robert Opas.
