Two 13-year-old female patients of the Voivodeship Psychiatric Hospital in Gdańsk were sexually abused. A 37-year-old man, also a patient of the hospital was detained and charged. In early June, in the same facility, a 26-year-old patient raped a 15-year-old girl.
Aspirant Karina Kamińska from the Gdańsk Metropolitan Police informed on Tuesday about the 37-year-old being detained.
She explained that the man, a resident of Gdynia, was detained on Sunday morning. On Monday, the police officers escorted him to the prosecutor's office in Gdańsk where he was charged with forcing the two girls to have sexual contact with him. By the court's order, the man was remanded in custody.
Radio Gdańsk was the first to report on Tuesday about the 37-year-old suspect, his two 13-year-old victims and that the crime was allegedly committed in May.
According to the prosecutor's office and the police, these were yet another sexual attacks that took place in the psychiatric hospital in Gdańsk. On the 6th of June, the head of one of the wards called the police and said there a 15-year-old patient notified the staff that she had been raped by another patient on the night between 5 and 6 of June.
When the crime took place, the girl was under the influence of sleep medication she had been given in the evening. She was admitted to the adult ward with her mother's consent as there was not enough beds in the youth ward.
The perpetrator, a 26-year-old, was detained and charged with rape and forcing the victim to have sexual contact with him. The suspect is facing 12 years in prison. The court ordered for him to be kept under hospital custody.
The prosecutor is examining not only the sexual assault itself but also if the medical staff took necessary necessary measures to provide safety for their patients.
The hospital also launched its own inquiry. The Voivodeship Marshal ordered an independent commission to investigate the case. By the orger of the health minister, the hospital is also to be checked by the regional division of the National Health Fund.
