Paweł Pawlikowski has been awarded Best Director in Cannes for his movie "Cold War". He dedicated the movie to the co-writer Janusz Głowacki who passed away in August. The story is loosely based on the lives of Pawlikowski's parents. Set in the 1950s, the movie tells a story of a sophisticated love that happens in the early years of the eponymous Cold War era. The movie stars Tomasz Kot, Agata Kulesza, Joanna Kulig and Borys Szyc.
"Paweł Pawlikowski is an auteur director therefore the Best Director award in Cannes is well-deserved. He received an individual accolade but it’s also a common success," said the producer of the movie, Ewa Puszczyńska.
During Saturday’s Awards Ceremony of the 71st Cannes Festival, Paweł Pawlikowski was awarded Best Director for his drama "Cold War". The movie was also shortlisted for the main prize of the festival, Palme d’Or which was awarded to Japanese drama "Shoplifters".
Very good reception
"The movie got a very good reception both from the critics and the public," said "Cold War" producer, Ewa Puszczyńska.
She added that the award "is the most deserved and the best we could have gotten, because it is an absolutely auteur cinema and everything in it, its structure, the way the actors play, the scenography and how the movie is really made, all of it has a touch of Paweł (Pawlikowski)".
Common goal
Asked about the work method preferred by Pawlikowski, the producer of "Cold War" said that "once you get to know and accept his method, you simply journey along with him to the very end, without minding that along the way there are many ups and downs, that it gets bumpy, difficult." "It was a common work for a common goal", she said.
Ewa Puszczyńska who had also worked with Pawlikowski on his Oscar-winning "Ida" said that "Cold War" "is a bigger production with bigger budget, but the method, as well the work and creative process were exactly the same, so there were no surprises there." "We knew what to expect when we decided to work with Paweł (Pawlikowski)", she said.
