Paulina Guba (AZS UMCS Lublin) has won the gold medal in shot put at Athletics Championships in Berlin. Guba, 27, has become the European champion with a 19.33-metre throw. Klaudia Kardasz (KS Podlasie Białystok) came fourth after beating her life record with 18.48 metres.
This gold is only a second medal won by Poland in this discipline in the history of European championships. The first one was bronze won 80 years ago by Wanda Flakowicz with 12.55 result.
Before the fifth round, 27-year-old Guba, who started her career in Start Otwock, was second with 19.02. First place was occupied by Germany's Christina Schwanitz who managed to reach 19.19 metres. In the final round, the Polish champion managed to throw even further to reach 19.33 metres, and the German responded only with 18.98.
So far, team Poland have won five medals. Earlier on, hammer-throwers Wojciech Nowicki and Paweł Fajdek won gold and silver respectively and shot-putters Michał Haratyk and Konrad Bukowiecki managed to take two top medals as well.
