Nobel Literature laureates Olga Tokarczuk and Peter Handke delivered their lectures in Stockholm on Saturday (December 7).
Both Olga Tokarczuk and Peter Handke will receive the Nobel Prizes on Tuesday from the hands of Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf at a formal ceremony with this year's other laureates. The ceremony will be followed by a gala banquet. THE CEREMONY OF HANDING THE NOBEL AWARD WILL BE BROADCASTED ON TVN24 AND TVN24.PL FROM 16.30.
Nobel lectures in Stockholm
Polish author Olga Tokarczuk spoke of divisions in society in her address as well as touching on climate change, while Handke spoke of his inspirations including songs by Bob Marley and Johnny Cash.
Austrian writer Handke won the 2019 Nobel Prize for Literature while Tokarczuk was named as the 2018 winner after a sexual assault scandal led to last year's award being postponed.
The Swedish Academy which chooses the literature laureate said it had recognised Handke, 76, for a body of work including novels, essays and drama "that with linguistic ingenuity has explored the periphery and the specificity of human experience."
Tokarczuk, 57, won for "a narrative imagination that with encyclopaedic passion represents the crossing of boundaries as a form of life," it said.
Both have courted controversy - Handke for his portrayal of Serbia as a victim during the Balkan wars and for attending its leader's funeral, and Tokarczuk for touching on dark areas of Poland's past that contrast with the version of history promoted by the country's ruling nationalist party.
A week of lectures, news conferences, public engagements and festivities culminates with the Nobel awards ceremony and royal banquet on Tuesday (December 10).
