Polish President Andrzej Duda spoke with his American counterpart Donald Trump at a NATO summit in Brussels on Wednesday, informed Chief of the President's Chancellery Krzysztof Szczerski. The head of states discussed strenghtening Polish-American military cooperation in the scope of equipment as well as cooperation between army units, added presidential aide Mr Szczerski.
Military issues
"A discussion within NATO summit, between Presidents Duda and Trump has just ended. President Trump invited President Duda to his office, here in NATO's headquarters," Krzysztof Szczerski told Polish Press Agency (PAP).
As he informed, the Presidents "mainly discussed military issues, including strenghtening Polish-American cooperation in the scope of equipment as well as cooperation between army units," said Szczerski.
"The President also discussed the future political meetings on the highest level," added the Chief of President's Chancellery.
Gas and spending
"We need a diversification of supplies, this is one of the most important goals of the European Union energy union," President Andrzej Duda told reporters as he arrived for the NATO summit in Brussels.
U.S. President Donald Trump accused Germany of being a "captive" of Russia on Wednesday as Western leaders gathered in Brussels for a NATO summit where Trump wants Europeans to pay up more for their own defence.
In a startling public outburst, Trump told NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg that Germany was wrong to support a new $11-billion Baltic Sea pipeline to import Russian gas while being slow to meet targets for contributing to NATO defence spending that was intended to protect Europe from Russia.
"We're supposed to be guarding against Russia and Germany goes out and pays billions and billions of dollars a year to Russia," Trump said in the presence of reporters at a pre-summit meeting at the residence of the U.S. ambassador to Belgium.
German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen hit back almost immediately: "We have a lot of issues with Russia without any doubt," she told reporters in English. "On the other hand, you should keep the communication line between countries or alliances and opponents without any question."
