We've been worrying that the new commission members who lack judges' experience may not be able to fulfil their duties, but all the problems seem to be gone; it looks that the elections will go as planned - said the Chairman of the National Electoral Committee (PKW) Wojciech Hermeliński.
Hermeliński said at a press conference that after a decree by the prime minister regarding the date of the elections has been issued on Tuesday, the electoral campaign, "such as described in the Electoral Code", has officially started. The first round of the local elections will take place on 21 October; the second on 4 November.
"I can only express my disappointment that some of the "pre-candidates" didn't listen to our appeals and have already started their "pre-campaings", Actually, in our opinion, these were actual campaigns, but this is all behind us anyway. From today on, all of the candidates are allowed to run their campaigns freely," said Mr Hermeliński.
He also emphasised that the local elections are most difficult to organise among all Polish elections.
"We've been worrying that the new commission members who lack judges' experience may not be able to fulfil their duties. Not all things in the past went as we expected, but at the moment all the problems seem to be gone. The only thing left is the division of municipalities into constituencies. However, we don't see any obstacles regarding this issue," said the PKW chairman.
Mr Hermeliński was also asked whether he can say today that the local elections will be held correctly and everything will go as planned.
"Everything seems to indicate that it will be so. I'm sure that we (PKW), the National Electoral Office, as well as any other committee members all over Poland will act in line with the law, honestly and transparently, so the elections are fair, just like we all like them to be," said Wojciech Hermeliński.
