Phan Thi Kim Phuc, better known as the "Napalm Girl" from Nick Ut's award-winning photograph from 1972, visited Warsaw on Monday. She assisted a group of more than 200 refugees from Ukraine who boarded a plane to Canada. A photograph of her running away from an air strike in 1972 is one of the most important symbols of the tragic Vietnam War.
"Phan Thi Kim Phuc - better known as as the "Napalm Girl" - the main figure of one the most famous images of the Vietnam War arrived at @Chopin Airport today, in order to assist a group of Ukrainian refugees who were departing for Canada" - Warsaw Chopin Airport said on social media on Tuesday and attached a number of photographs taken right before take off.
Today, Phan Thi Kim Phuc is 59 and lives in Toronto. AP said on Tuesday that she had escorted 236 refugees running away from Russia's aggression against Ukraine, mainly women and children, to a flight from Warsaw to a Canadian city of Regina.
Canada is among many Western countries offering Ukrainian refugees safe haven.
The famous photo of Phan Thi Kim Phuc was etched on the aircraft which took the refugees across the Atlantic.
"Napalm Girl" - legendary war photograph
The famous photograph was taken on June 8, 1972. Nick Ut took a picture of a group of people running away from napalm bombs dropped by South Vietnamese aircraft. A screaming 9-year-old naked girl is seen in the middle of the photo - it was young Kim Phuc Phan Thi.
The image won every major photo award in 1973, including the World Press Photo and the Pulitzer Prize. But the photo had an even bigger impact on the fate of Kim Phuc Phan Thi, as it helped to save the girl's life. She suffered painful burns across 1/3 of her skin surface. The damage to her left hand, shoulder, neck and large part of her back also impaired her movement.
At the end of June, Phan Thi Kim Phuc received her final skin treatment which has restored her movement and removed the pain.
