"With surprise and outrage, which I expressed on the program, I took note of media comments on Anne Applebaum's background. I felt the minister should have the opportunity to respond to them, which he did on Kropka nad i," stated TVN24 journalist Monika Olejnik in an official statement. She was referring to Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski's reaction to her question on the program.
On Tuesday, Monika Olejnik hosted Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski on Kropka nad i. During the interview, Olejnik questioned Sikorski on the primary election set to select the Civic Coalition’s presidential candidate. Sikorski will be running in the primaries against Warsaw's Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski.
At the end of the interview, Olejnik asked Sikorski about a passage from an article written by a journalist from Tygodnik Powszechny (published in gazeta.pl), which she admitted "surprised her." According to the article, she noted, "members of the Civic Coalition view the background of the foreign minister’s wife as a problem." In response, Sikorski remarked: "I would say there is now a secular tradition of first ladies being of Jewish descent."
Shortly after, Sikorski posted on X, stating: "I find it unacceptable to bring up a candidate's spouse's background as a topic in a presidential election. Contrary to Ms. Olejnik's insinuation, we are not a country of anti-Semites. I demand that TVN and Warner Bros./Discovery restore journalistic standards."
In a statement posted on Instagram, Olejnik explained her intentions, writing:
"With surprise and outrage, which I expressed on the program, I took note of the media statements regarding Anne Applebaum’s background. I felt the minister should have the opportunity to address these remarks, which he did on 'Kropka nad i'" the journalist stated.
"I apologize to you, all my viewers, if I was not clear or emphatic enough. I had no intention of making any insinuations, and like Minister Sikorski, I believe Poland is not an antisemitic country!" Olejnik emphasized.
She assured that she has been "fighting against antisemitism, violence, hate, and aggression for years" and that she is "not indifferent" to these issues.
