Members of the European Parliament stood for a minute of silence in Strasbourg on Monday in memory of Gdansk mayor Pawel Adamowicz, who died in hospital of wounds sustained in an attack on Sunday evening.

European Parliament President Antonio Tajani paid tribute to Adamowicz and said he had "great openness and capacity to listen".

Tajani then asked the members present in the chamber to stand for a moment of silence in memory of Adamowicz and all victims of hate and violence.

Adamowicz was attacked on stage at a charity event in Gdansk by a man who accused the mayor's former party of putting him in prison, where he said he was tortured.

Thousands of people gathered in vigils across the country on Monday evening, including in the cities of Gdansk, Poznan and the capital Warsaw.
