The Mayor of Mikołajki, a popular resort town in Poland's lake region of Mazury, informed on social media that a moose has been roaming the streets for a few weeks now. He also urged local residents not to come close to the wild animal, not even to take a quick selfie.
Mikołajki Mayor Piotr Jakubowski addressed local residents and tourists via social media. He attached a photo of a sturdy moose eating plants out of a flowerbed in front of a tourist resort near the local beach and town center.
"A moose has been roaming the streets of Mikołajki for a few weeks now. It feels so good in Mikołajki it has decided to settle here permanently," the mayor said.
He stressed, however, that it was a wild animal and urged people to keep a safe distance from it. "Not all of us know how to behave in case of an encounter with a wild animal, and lack of knowledge can end in tragedy both for a person and the animal, which is likely to display unpredictable behaviour when startled," he urged.
Mayor calls to stays calm
The mayor advised to stay calm and not startle the moose. "Do not approach the animal under any circumstances, even to take a selfie with the moose! And lastly - feeding animals is prohibited," Jakubowski cautioned.
Local authorities have taken necessary steps in order to capture the animal, but the procedure is pending a decision from the Mrągowo County officials. "I hope the May break will be safe for the locals and tourists, and that the moose will find a safe shelter somewhere far away from the town," the mayor added.
Mikołajki - located between Mikołajskie and Tałty lakes - for many years has been one of the most popular summer resorts and watersports spots in Mazury.
