Polish PM: we achieved our goals; radical candidate almost chosen

"I was aware the decisions that were made yesterday and the day before were key for the future of the European Union for years to come," Morawiecki told journalists in Brussels.

"We demonstrated that we need candidates carrying potential to unite Europe, who do not antagonise Europe and do not offend member-states," he argued.

That's why, he added, Poland was against Frans Timmermans' candidacy to become the new head of EU Commission, as he "wasn't a candidate to unite Europe".

He stressed that it was a new beginning for Europe, and hence it required new people. "We have allowed new proposals with completely new candidates," he added. Morawiecki also said that "we were inches away from choosing a redical candidate, a candidate of ideological left wing".

According to Polish PM, "the process of choosing this candidate wasn't fully transparent".

"The EU Treaties, Article 17, clearly defines the role of the European Council in the process of selecting the EU Commission chief. I have stressed that very strongly in my numerous speeches in the EU Council, that the Treaty, as well asthe whole process of choosing the EU Commission's chief must be respected," Morawiecki said.

He added that "non-treaty agreements, which were being mentioned by some as having been made in Osaka, shouldn't have been made at all".

European leaders have agreed on who should fill the top jobs for its main institutions for the next five years after a marathon summit, European Council President Donald Tusk and Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel said on Twitter.

France's Christine Lagarde has been proposed for the presidency of the European Central Bank, Belgium's Charles Michel for European Council president, Germany's Ursula von der Leyen for European Commission president and Spain's Josep Borrell for EU foreign policy chief.
