This year's Nike, a prestigious literary award went to Marcin Wicha for his volume of short stories entitled "The things I didn't throw out". The volume tells the story of life and passing of the author's mother.
The chairman of the jury, Professor Marek Zaleski said: "Wicha writes about tenderness, that we feel ashamed of in our daily lives, but he writes it in such a way, that there's nothing to be ashamed". He added: "He takes us behind the scenes of reality and portrayes it so that we, the readers from different generations, can find in it our own emotions".
Marcin Wicha also won the vote of "Gazeta Wyborcza" readers.
This year, apart from Marek Zaleski, the jury comprised of: Agata Dowgird, Joanna Krakowska, Anna Nasiłowska, Antoni Pawlak, Paweł Próchniak, Paweł Rodak, Joanna Szczęsna oraz Andrzej Werner.
Nike is the award for the best book of the year. Authors of books of all literary genres may be nominated. The winner receives a 100,000 zloty prize and a statuette designed by the prominent Polish sculptor Kazimierz Gustaw Zemła. The award is funded by "Gazeta Wyborcza" and Agora Foundation. The list of laureates since 1997 includes, among others, writers such as Wiesław Myśliwski, Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz, Czesław Miłosz, Dorota Masłowska, Olga Tokarczuk and Jerzy Pilch.
