Two Polish women, aged 30 and 64, were assaulted in London by a 27-year-old man, who repeteadly struck them with a hammer. Both victims remain in hospital in a critical condition. The attacker was detained by the police and heard charges.
Details of the incident which took place on Sunday in southeast London's Borough of Greenwich, were revealed in Monday's statement by the Metropolitan Police, as well as in the witnesses' account published in the British media.
According to journalists, the man was unknown to the women, although he lived on the same street. Most likely, the attacker suffers from mental disorders and picked his victims randomly, according to teh media.
The arrest was made possible thanks to the residents of southeast London, who responded to police appeal and helped to determine the attacker's whereabouts. One of the woman who called the police, had followed the man until the constables arrived.
The man was charged with the attemped murder of two women in Greenwich, according to the Metropolitan police. Joe Xuereb, 27, of Greenwich, will appear in custody on Tuesday, 21 August at Bromley Magistrates' Court.
Polish consular services in London are in contact with relatives of the attacked women, as well as with officers investigating the attack.
