Slovak Lucia Duris Nicholsonova has been chosen the new head of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee of the European Parliament. In the vote, 38 MEPs were in favour of her candidacy, 14 were against and 3 abstained. In two previous ballots, MEPs have twice rejected Poland's former prime minister Beata Szydło from Law and Justice party (PiS).
"I'm a person of actions and results, not political marketing. The employment committee is the most important one in the EP; it takes crucial decisions regarding social situation of the Europeans," said the new head of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee Lucia Duris Nicholsonova of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) faction.
In her speech, she also expressed thanks for this opportunity and stressed that she’s willing to cooperate with all members of all factions constructively. She called on them to resolve their conflicts, if they have any, in the plenary of the EP and not within the committee.
"We still think that Beata Szydło was the best candidate to head the employment committee. She has huge political experience and enjoys huge support matched by on one in Europe," Law and Justice MEP Beata Mazurek told journalists in Strasbourg.
She added that the European Conservatists and Reformist faction didn't want to end up with losing this posting. "Hence the decision to put forward the Slovak," she explained. In her opinion, there was a risk that other factions, such as social democrats, would attempt to take over the committee's leadership.
Mazurek underscored that Duris Nicholsonova has experience. "She was a deputy minister and dealt with social policy for many years. I trust that politics won't overshadow actual work. We will definitely stand by the principles and firmly push for solutions beneficial for Poles. That's what we promised in the campaign," Polish MEP said.
