Stanisław Pięta has been suspended as Law and Justice (PiS) member. The decision by the party’s leader Jarosław Kaczyński means that Pięta will also be suspended as a member of the parliamentary club. Furthermore, he will cease to sit in the parliamentary committee on Amber Gold affair and parliamentary special committee, PiS politicians informed.
PiS spokesperson, Beata Mazurek said "the decision regarding the suspension of Stanisław Pięta is connected to the recent media revelations".
"Temporary decision"
Deputy Speaker of the Sejm and PiS parliamentary club leader, Ryszard Terlecki said later on "so far we only have media information and media comments from the Mr Pięta himself. We haven’t spoken to him yet about this whle situation".
Terlecki added: "For now we’ve made only temporary decisions and we’re waiting for explanation. Mr Pięta has been suspended in his rights as PiS member which will result in suspension him from the parliamentary club and two commissions."
According to Law and Justice’s statute, suspension of membership rights of the party can occur, among others, after the chaiman’s decision "resulting from substantiated assumption that the suspended exposed the good name of the party or the party itself to damage, especially after launching disciplinary action and until the hearing by the Disciplinary Committee or until clearing the case that caused the suspension."
Too early to predict
PiS disciplinary commissioner, Karol Karski informed that he has initiated the disciplinary action and that evidence in Mr Pięta’s case is being collected. He stressed that it was too early to predict what will be the result of disciplinary proceedings.
The Law and Justice statute provides that the purpose of a disciplinary action is to ascertain whether or not and how the accused had breached the discipline. In case of finding the accused guilty, the disciplinary commissioner may appeal for punishment to the Disciplianary or Political Commitee. The punishment can take form of reprimand, reproof, ban from fulfilling any role in PiS authorities for a period of 6 months to 2 years, or even expulsion from the party.
The statute allows the Disciplinary or Political Committees to either punish or exonerate the accused, or to discontinue the proceedings.
Affair allegation
Last week, "Fakt" newspaper wrote that MP Stanisław Pięta had an affair and, according to the paper, promised her lover a job in the PKN Orlen state-owned giant. According to "Fakt", Pięta met the woman during the 7th anniversary of the Smolensk catastophy on 10 April 2017. The newspaper informed that in order to prove her relations with Pięta, the woman revealed their messages from social media.
Stanisław Pięta said that the revelations are an attack on him. In his comments in media, he was reassuring that he "wasn’t fixing" a job in PKN Orlen for the lady mentioned in the press. He also said that their relations were limited strictly to "official, organisational and political issues".
Stanisław Pięta replaced Beata Mazurek in the parliamentary committee on Special Services on 13 April and has been a member of the Amber Gold investigation committee from its inception on 22 July 2016.
