Russian Foreign Minister said on Friday that Polish authorities brainwash its population in what he called an attempt to create an atmosphere of total intolerance to everything related to Russia.
Speaking to the students of Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Lavrov said Poland rewrites history in accordance with its political interests.
"I think it is very dangerous to bring these historic fantasies into today's politics. One can feel that a real brainwashing of the population is taking place in Poland now which is directed solely against Russia. Simultaneous declarations like "we are ready to talk and let's meet" sound completely unrealistic against such background" - said Lavrov.
"I see an obsession with creating in the society the atmosphere of total intolerance to everything related to Russia. This is bad, it does not coincide with the principles Poland had when it joined the United Nations and when the OSCE was created" - he added. Polish President Andrzej Duda recently approved amendments to a law banning promotion of communism and ordering the removal of Soviet statues within a year - including those commemorating the Red Army. Russia said the Polish move spits in the faces of the more than 600,000 Soviet troops who lost their lives liberating Poland from the Nazis. But many Poles today say they view the Soviet troops as occupiers, not liberators. Poland was under Soviet control for over four decades after the Second World War and the last Russian soldiers left in 1993.
