U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker urged Kiev on Tuesday to prevent new incidents with Ukrainian vessels in Kerch strait.
Volker visited the port of Odessa where the U.S. guided missile destroyer USS Donald Cook had anchored earlier on Monday.
The U.S. envoy said the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer was not a challenge for Russia in some specific way but only a sign of respect and support for Ukraine's sovereignty.
Last November, the Russian navy captured 24 Ukrainian sailors and their vessels in the Kerch Strait, which links the Black and Azov seas, fuelling tensions between the two countries.
Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.
