Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Thursday after the meeting with the new President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen that Krzysztof Szczerski is Poland's candidate for EU Commissioner. Asked about which portfolio would Szczerski take over, Morawiecki replied that it was too early to comment.
"I would like to thank everyone involved in the decision-making for showing trust in me, as I consider this a proof of trust. In a way, this is the crowning achievement of my professional and academic career," he added.
He also said that he's been actively involved in the European politics for 20 years, since he found himself in the EU Commission as an intern.
"I'm returning after 20 years as a candidate for commissioner. In the meantime I have worked in the European Parliament, I've been the deputy chief of the Office of the Committee for European Integration and the head of Parliamentary Committee on the EU, and in recent years I've dealt with foreign policy on behalf of the President, so by trade I've been very active in Brussels politics for years," the presidential minister said. He underscored that he's been dealing with EU affairs also on the academic path, also at foreign universities.
"Therefore, I consider this as a milestone and crown achievement of the 20 years of my dealings with the European politics. I would like to thank the prime minister and the president for trust in me. I hope that once accepted by the EP I will play an important part in Ursula von der Leyen's Commission. The scope of my responsibilities depends on the ongoing talks involving PM Morawiecki," the head of the president's chancellery Krzysztof Szczerski said.
He also expressed hope that "Poland, as an important member-state, would be given an important scope of responsibilities within the new EU Commission".
