Law and Justice's (PiS) spokeswoman Beata Mazurek confirmed that on the 9th of January in Warsaw, the party's leader Jarosław Kaczyński will meet with the Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Matteo Salvini. She added that the talks will be held on the "matters of interest for both sides".

Italian "La Repubblica" was the first on Thursday to report on about the planned meeting. According to the paper, the goal is to form an alliance for the elections to the European Parliament.

The spokeswoman for PiS confirmed the news reported by "La Repubblica". "The topics of the talks are of interest for both sides, both Polish and Italian," she said. Mazurek did not confirm if the talks are to be on matters regarding elections to the European Parliament.

Salvini's visit would be the first since he took over his office in June last year and has not been yet officially confirmed in Rome.

A centre-left Italian daily also reported that arranging the meeting with Law and Justice's chairman wasn't easy; in order for it to take place, a secret delegation of the Northern League (headed by Salvini) visited Warsaw twice. It was also mentioned that the head of Italian home office is considered a "too-close friend of Moscow".

According to the paper, the Northern League leader's visit will have an economical character. In this context, it was reminded that some 3,500 Italian companies have their seats in Poland.

However, the paper stresses that the real goal of Salvini's visit is, first and foremost, a political one and that it's connected to the upcoming elections to the European Parliament, as well as possibly forming a joint front that would comprise PiS, Northern League and other right-wing forces. Both leaders, reads the article, "speak the same language when it comes to closing borders to immigrants.
