Janusz Wojciechowski is Poland's new candidate for EU Commissioner - the spokesperson for the government, Piotr Müller informed on Monday.
The chief of the president's office, Krzysztof Szczerski, withdrew his bid to become the EU Commissioner, after he was offered to take over the agricultural portfolio.
Private radio station RMF FM was the first to inform about Szczerski's resignation. The government spokesperson confirmed this information later on Monday.
"Mr Szczerski has never dealt with this issue (agriculture) before, hence his decision. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki respects it and treats it in a constructive and pro-state manner," Müller said on Monday at a briefing in front of PM's office.
He announced that Janusz Wojciechowski, a former chairman of the Supreme Audit Office, long-time MEP and member of European Parliament's Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, will be Poland's new candidate for EU Commissioner.
Müller underscored that Wojciechowski is a person whose professional and political interests were focused on agricultural issues.
"These decisions were taken today and his candidacy will be put forward to the European Commission," he said.
"We're very happy because the decision to take over agricultural portfolio, if it's finally approved, would be a very, very good decision for Poland, as this sphere is particularly important for us. All agricultural issues are very important to us, and the overall EU budget funds earmarked for this sphere are very high," Müller said.
