“A single tweet with complete diagnosis,” the president of the Nowoczesna caucus Katarzyna Lubnauer told TVN24's Fakty po Faktach, commenting on a tweet by the President of the European Council Donald Tusk. “He came to the conclusion that this is the moment to speak courageously about what's happening,” she added.
“Emergency! Sharp dispute with Ukraine, isolation in the European Union, abandonment of the rule of law and independence of courts, attack on non-governmental sector and free media – a strategy devised by PiS or a plan orchestrated by the Kremlin? Too close to give you peace of mind,” tweeted the head of the European Council Donald Tusk on Sunday. The tweet triggered a storm of comments.
“He entered the game”
The head of the Nowoczesna caucus Katarzyna Lubnauer also talked about the tweet to TVN24's Fakty po Faktach.
“It is clear that Donald Tusk has entered the game and I think I can understand him better than anyone else,” she said.
As she pointed out, there was very little time left before the election, and – in her opinion – “Donald Tusk is aware that a certain courage is needed at the moment.”
“The opposition in particular is waiting for some kind of hope,” she said.
“What Law and Justice is doing is completely incomprehensible,” she remarked, mentioning the crisis in Poland’s relations with Ukraine and the resolution adopted on Wednesday by the European Parliament, calling on the Polish government to respect provisions on the rule of law and basic rights, enshrined in the treaties. MEPs also launched their own procedure to trigger Article 7 of the Treaty of the European Union against Poland.
“Donald Tusk came to the conclusion that this was the moment to speak courageously about this, and hence his tweet,” said the president of the Nowoczesna caucus.
“His presence on 11 November was the first signal,” she argued. “Perhaps the purpose of this tweet was to add value to it and to attract attention.”
“A single tweet with a complete diagnosis”
According to Lubnauer, “this single tweet contains a complete diagnosis.”
“On the one hand, various institutions of the state are being subverted, and on the other hand, our relations with virtually all of our neighbours are deteriorating – not only with Ukraine, but also with Germany, our partner in the European Union,” she explained.
She described Tusk's tweet as “a comment on the resolution and the diplomatic actions of this government.”
She admitted to having retweeted the tweet of the head of the European Council.
“Donald Tusk reacted, because there is less and less time to act. Without courageous actions there will be no change. PiS will not go away voluntarily,” she tweeted.
As she noted, “Donald Tusk is a high-ranking European Union official and he may have the support of other European Union politicians to write such a tweet.”
“On the other hand: I think he wants to participate in Polish politics. He is aware how much the opposition needs hope that something will change, that the opposition can win the next election.
Without such hope PiS will only get stronger, and I believe he does not want this,” commented Lubnauer.
“If he comes back, it would be for the presidential election”
Asked whether Tusk may return to Polish politics, she replied: “If he does come back, it might be for the presidential election in 2020.”
“His term of office expires after parliamentary and European elections,” she pointed out. Donald Tusk's term of office as President of the European Council ends in 2019.
Asked whether she would vote for him, Lubnauer replied that this would depend on whether the opposition had one candidate, or whether each party put forward its own candidate.
“Undoubtedly, Donald Tusk is a high-calibre politician,” she concluded.
