Dogs in the Polish town of Wadowice Dolne were evacuated by boat on Wednesday after a nearby river burst its banks, flooding the shelter they were in.
The head of the shelter Piotr Gajdek said local residents with boats had helped with the evacuation after workers posted an appeal on Facebook.
All of the shelter's residents, consisting of 55 dogs and one cat, were rescued and taken to a temporary shelter.
Persistent heavy rains have caused flooding throughout southern Poland.
According to local media, firefighters were called out 1259 times and over 1000 buildings have been affected by the floods.
Houses in the south-eastern village of Suchy Grunt were inundated after local rivers became swollen with floodwater.
Residents built makeshift barriers from sandbags but complained that the sand was delivered too late by firefighters to prevent damage to their properties.
Elsewhere firefighters' efforts were praised. In Odolanów, school headmaster Rafał Paterek said thanks to the local fire service's quick intervention, and the assistance of school staff, the floods only caused limited damage.
The Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) issued flood warnings throughout south-eastern Poland where heavy rain is expected to continue until Friday (May 24).
