Activists from environmental group Greenpeace covered the headquarters of major Polish political parties with black banners bearing the slogan "Poland without coal 2030" in Warsaw on Tuesday.
The slogan refers to Greenpeace's call for both ruling party Law and Justice and the opposition Civic Platform to commit to reducing the use of coal for energy in Poland to zero by 2030.
The protest, which took place just over a week ahead of the start of elections to the European Parliament, also called attention to what Greenpeace called a lack of attention to environmental issues from both parties.
Activist Sarah said the EU elections and Polish parliamentary elections later this year were a chance for a switch to renewable energy sources.
In 2018 around 80 percent of Poland's power production was provided by coal-fired power plants.
The government aims to cut that to half by 2040, with renewables and nuclear providing much of the rest and gas-fired generation providing back-up.
