"Freedom of speech and a free press are the keys to a thriving democracy," said U.S. Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski during a conference in Warsaw focused on strengthening media independence. He thanked journalists for their commitment to the pursuit of truth and spoke of their "great service" to Poland and the United States.
"Journalists hold government officials accountable. You help people understand the events that shape their lives so they can make informed and responsible decisions," Brzezinski said during the CIPE (Center for International Private Enterprise) conference in Warsaw.
"A critical role of journalism in any democracy," emphasized the U.S. Ambassador.
In his speech, Brzezinski thanked journalists for their dedication to the pursuit of truth. "It’s a great service to Poland, it’s a great service to the United States, and it’s a great service to the globe."
The diplomat also addressed informing the public during Russia's military invasion of Ukraine. He stated that "the world is watching what is happening here" and noted that "Poland is one of the good news stories of our time in a sea of tragic headlines."
"The kindness of Polish humanity has been on full display. Throughout these historic moments, Polish media has had an essential role in telling that story, and sharing that story," Brzezinski said, referring to Poland's and Poles' stance toward Kyiv during Russian aggression.
"I can say on behalf of President Joe Biden that the Polish heart, helping the Ukrainian refugees is so incredibly impressive and appreciated," emphasized the American diplomat. "It’s the media that has provided safe and reliable information for refugees, and those seeking to help refugees and to connect to resources in Poland," he added.
Addressing the journalists, Brzezinski said: "You are ensuring the public knows the truth about Putin’s war, about Putin’s atrocities. You are sharing the human toll it’s taking, which, in turn, has facilitated global awareness for Ukraine, and global understanding of the trauma being inflicted on Ukraine."
In his address, Brzezinski also focused on the media situation in Russia, where "the government’s systemic effort to eliminate independent media has left a vacuum left by the Kremlin’s lies about the war in Ukraine."
"Our most powerful antidote to Russia’s lies is, of course, the truth.," Brzezinski emphasized.
CIPE, the organization hosting the conference on strengthening media independence, is a pro-democracy organization founded in 1983 in Washington, operating in more than 80 countries.
