14 years have passed since the navy flag with gold stars was hoisted next to the red and white one. On the first of May 2004, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Slovenia, Cyprus and Malta joined the European Union. It was the largest ever expansion of the borders of the organisation.
