It took the firefighters more than 3 hours to extinguish an old Dutch windmill in the town of Nowe in northern Poland. The fire was caught on video camera by one of the witnesses. Unfortunately, the structure couldn't be saved. The police are investigating the incident.
The local fire service received a call regarding the fire half past midnight on Sunday.
A 19th-century Dutch windmill in the town of Nowe burst into flames. Firefighter struggled to extinguish the structure for more than three hours. Fire engines with tall ladders appeared at the scene. Unfortunately, the windmill couldn't be saved.
"An expert witness has been appointed to examine the windmill. Only after we would be able to determine what caused the fire" - said Julia Świerczyńska of Świecie police department.
She added it was being determined whether or not the 19th-century windmill could be marked as heritage site.
"It's a private property, the town isn't the owner. At this point we're unable to ascertain if it's a heritage site or not, and the legal classification depends on that" - Świerczyńska added.
