Extinction Rebellion activists blocked a major avenue in Warsaw at the riverbank close to the Royal Castle. This caused huge traffic jams in both directions which lasted about 3 hours.
Shortly before noon on Monday, activists from the Extinction Rebellion blocked one of the major streets in Warsaw, the Wisłostrada, close to the Royal Castle.
Reporter from tvnwarszawa.pl Mateusz Szmelter said the activists were sat in the middle of the road and set up a metal construction with hammocks attached. "It resembles a wigwam. Chained to it is a girl wearing a dress resembling an igloo. On the side of the road stands a tent. The police have surrounded the protesters but have not yet used any force" - he said.
"A blockade has been set up at the Wisłostrada near the Śląsko-Dąbrowski bridge. We protest against political inaction in the face of a climate disaster which puts our future on Earth at risk" - the activists wrote on Facebook.
Spokesman for the Warsaw Police Sylwester Marczak said after 1 p.m. that the traffic was restored and all protesters were removed from the road.
"Some protesters unchained themselves of the metal construction. They did that after a request by the organisers, as some of the participants were minors" - Szmelter said.
