The European Commission wants U.S. visa waivers for 5 European Union countries whose citizens still require visas to travel across the Atlantic: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland and Romania. The EU executive announced on Wednesday further diplomatic action in that regard.
The USA remain the only country that haven't granted the non-visa entry right to all EU citizens. A year ago, on the 1st of December 2017 a full visa reciprocity was reached with Canada, after the country abolished visa duty for citizens of Romania and Bulgaria.
On Wednesday the EU Commission presented progress made within the last year on the path to reaching full visa reciprocity with the United States.
The EU executive announced that, in cooperation with the 5 states whose citizens still require visas to go to the USA, it will still be engaging the dialogue over this matter with Washington.
"Achieving visa reciprocity for all EU member-states is our main priority. Recent practice shows that deeper diplomatic involvement brings positive results and so we will stick to this approach also in case of the United States. Non-visa travel is in the best interest of countries on both sides of the Atlantic and so we expect concrete action by all parties, in order to facilitate reaching that goal," said on Wednesday the Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos.
In the last 12 months political and technical contacts regarding this issue have intensified. The Commission is still calling on the United States to continue cooperation over this matter with Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland and Romania.
