The European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) has decided to send a letter to Polish authorities regarding the situation of the rights of the LGBT community, and a separate document to the Council of Europe and the European Commission regarding pressuring of Polish judges - Polish Press Agency learned from two sources in the EP.
The initiative was put forward by the Renew Europe group. On Wednesday, the idea was first discussed by the political groups coordinators, whereas the decision was approved by the whole committee on Thursday.
"The decision to issue the letters has been first accepted by the LIBE coordinators, and then backed on Thursday at the committee session with no opposing voices. The letters haven't been written yet. They will be prepared by the committee's chief," the source in the EP told PAP.
The source also said that at the coordinators' meeting, the representive of the ECR faction (Poland's ruling Law and Justice party is a member) was skeptical towards the proposal, adding at the same time that the Polish government was ready to reply to the letter and explain any concerns it may include.
The letters are meant to serve as reaction to the incidents that took place in recent weeks, for instance, hooliganism and attacks on participants of the Equality Parade in Białystok, as well as the smear campaign, allegedly involving former deputy justice minister Łukasz Piebiak, waged against judges criticising changes to the judiciary.
