Polish documentary Pianoforte, directed by Jakub Piątek, was honored with an International Emmy Award at a ceremony in New York on Monday. The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (IATAS) presents these awards for productions created outside the United States.
Pianoforte is a 2023 documentary directed by Jakub Piątek. According to filmpolski.pl, the film captures the coming-of-age journey of participants in the legendary International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. In the 2021 edition of the competition, 87 exceptional musicians advanced to the first stage, but only 12 reached the finals.
The film portrays the lives of young musicians from various parts of the world who have dedicated their lives to playing the piano. Their experiences are described as an "emotional rollercoaster."
"Well, that's that. We have an Emmy," Maciej Kubicki, the producer of Pianoforte, wrote on social media. He included photos from the awards ceremony with his post.
In the Arts Programming category, Pianoforte competed against the British Robbie Williams, the Argentine Virgilio, and the Japanese Who I Am Life.
Piątek's work was also recognized by the members of the Polish Film Academy, who honored it an award for best documentary at this year’s ceremony. Additionally, the film earned awards and distinctions at numerous festivals, including Millennium Docs Against Gravity and "The Youth and Film" festival ("Młodzi i Film").
The International Emmy Awards recognize excellence in 14 categories, including best actor, actress, comedy, documentary, drama series, telenovela, and TV movie/miniseries. This year, 56 titles from 21 countries, including the UK, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, India, and France, were nominated.

Additionally, the 2024 International Emmy for news went to Inside Gaza: Israel-Hamas at War by Channel 4 News (UK).
The Current Affairs Emmy was awarded to Sky News for The Last Hospital: 30 Days in Myanmar.

The New York gala marked the 52nd International Emmy Awards ceremony, hosted by Indian actor and comedian Vir Das. The separate Primetime Emmy Awards, which honor American creators and productions, took place in September.
