A very serious accident occurred in Olsztyn on Monday (May 27). A drunk truck driver hit a bus and plowed into four cars. At least 12 people were taken to the hospital, and a total of 26 people were injured.
The accident happened after 7 p.m. on Bałtycka Street. An empty dump truck collided with a city bus. At least four cars were also involved in the accident, one of which overturned - the spokesperson for the Warmian-Masurian fire service Grzegorz Różański told tvn24.pl.
According to the spokesperson, a total of 26 people were injured. Twelve were taken to a hospital, including the truck driver, who likely caused the accident.
"In the initial triage, the condition of five people was assessed as life-threatening. All individuals were conscious at the time of the arrival of the emergency services," the firefighter added.
Spokesperson for the Olsztyn police Jacek Wilczewski told TVN24 that a total of 13 people, including the truck driver, were taken to the hospital, and the condition of three of them was "more serious."
He added that the 42-year-old truck driver was intoxicated, with breath alcohol content of more than 2 permille (0.20%).
The police were conducting operations at the scene. "Our main focus is to secure all evidence, identify and interview witnesses," Wilczewski said.
Thirteen fire brigade units were dispatched to the accident, involving 48 firefighters.
