"Mentally, emotionally and life-wise I'm ready to make any decision to help reverse this course of events, detrimental to Poland" - former prime minister Donald Tusk told TVN24 on Friday. He added that it was not about his personal ambitions, but rather to restore democratic order in Poland.
In an interview for TVN24, current president of the European People's Party Donald Tusk said that in his life he fulfilled many different roles. "Some situations were difficult, others seemed hopeless" - he he said. His time as prime minister, he stressed, had been very intense and his decision had not always been wise, "just like in life".
"This feeling that you're in politics to change the reality, to make decisions and make a leave a mark, is the most exciting thing, because politics can be very boring when you don't have driving force. I can see this pain in the faces of many opposition leaders, I know it very well" - Tusk said.
He also said that it was obvious that with his worldview and experience he would like to see "political change in Poland". Furthermore, he said he was discussing with public debate figures how he could help to break the impasse. In his view, new energy and a certain new deal in Polish opposition were necessary.
Asked how he imagined his potential role, he replied that "the sky is the limit". "I don't set any limits for myself (...) Today, I really don't have a need to satisfy any personal ambitions, however, I do feel a strong urge to reach a certain goal, which is to restore democratic order in Poland, as well as this libertarian order" - he explained.
"I feel that we need to invest everything we have in order for freedom, democracy or decency in public life not to be just a dream, but to become reality again. Mentally, emotionally and life-wise I'm ready to make any decision to help reverse this course of events, detrimental to Poland" - Donald Tusk declared.
According to Tusk, restoring synergy in opposition is crucial. "So that people, especially opposition leaders, had more understanding and tenderness towards each other" - he said stipulating he did not want to get in anybody's way.
"I don't want to make things more complicated as it would be a complete nonsense, that's why we're discussing ways in which I could be of help" - Tusk said.
Asked if he planned to take over the leadership in Civic Platform, he said he was ready to do anything for the party not to become history. In his view, PO was absolutely indispensable "as a responsible centrist party", "if we think about winning the next parliamentary election".
Asked on his assessment of Borys Budka as PO leader, Tusk said his colleague took over in very hard times for the party and that it was a serious challenge for him. "With all certainly, PO needed a new impulse at the time and Borys Budka knew how to do it, and later helped PO to go through a critical phase" - he added. "He's a good boss, who seems not to boost confidence in people at the moment" - he said and added he did not want to judge him and to talk with Budka face to face.
"I'd rather help to fix situation in Civic Platform, than to comment on its internal concerns in the media" - Tusk said. He also informed he would speak with Borys Budka in June about how to enforce PO and the opposition.
