"It’s not a duel between the Polish government and the European Commission. It’s a rather serious dispute on whether or not, Poland will be a rule of law state," said the chaiman of the European Council, Donald Tusk to the journalists in Sofia, after the EU summit.
"I don’t expect the Polish government to concede to any institution, including the European Commission. I wish the Polish government would concede to the obvious expectations of basically all the people in Europe, or almost all the people but first and foremost in Poland, in order to fix all those things that raised so many concerns in Poland and Europe regarding the judiciary, the Constitutional Tribumal and so on," said Donald Tusk.
"Enthusiastic response"
"I’m glad that the positive changes in the judiciary that we’ve introduced are being noticed," said the Polish prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki. In his view, the independence of the whole justice system has been significantly increased.
The prime minister said at a press conference on Thursday that he had another conversation with the European Commission chairman, Jean-Claude Juncker regarding judiciary reforms in Poland.
He added that in the conversation, he has emphasised that by introducing solutions that will soon come into effect, Poland made an enthusiastic response to the Commission’s expectations, at the same keeping the possibility to reform the judiciary.
"Optimistic declaration"
"I’m happy to hear that the chairman of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker is optimistic about the dialogue with Poland," said Polish foreign minister Jacek Czaputowicz.
On Tuesday, Mr Juncker said "Poland has made progress, but not enough progress." He added that there is a discussion and negotiations that must be concluded by the end of June or early July. "I’m optimistic," said Jean-Claude Juncker.
"I think that he has expressed it based on a knowledge that he has and his premonition. Therefore I’m glad about this optimistic declaration," said Polish foreign minister.
Asked whether Poland is ready to make further concessions to Brussels regarding the judiciary reforms, Mr Czaputowicz reminded that the prime minister Morawiecki recently discussed the issue with the EC chaiman. "Certain reforms were adopted in Poland. We know that the European Commission is satisfied with the dialogue and with the adoption of these reforms," he added.
