In his final address to the United Nations General Assembly Thursday (September 26), European Council President, Donald Tusk, tried to fool no one in taking on global warming and what he called "national egoism."
His speech took direct aim at the promotion of "fake news." He went on, "Frankly speaking, it will be enough to simply stop lying," he said. "You have to stop flirting with dictators and authoritarian regimes."
It is incumbent upon leaders not to allow healthy patriotism to grow toxic, he noted.
"The history of our nations shows how easy it is to transform the love of one's homeland into a hatred towards one's neighbors. How easy it is to transform the pride of one's own culture into a contempt for the culture of strangers."
He also joined those who see global warming as an urgent matter.
"I have no doubt that we are in an environmental emergency," he said.
"We are fast approaching a point beyond which we will only be able to mitigate climate change rather than reverse it."
EU leaders will meet for a make-or-break summit in Brussels two weeks before Britain's departure date.
