President Andrzej Duda announced that he had a phone conversation with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. "I would like to pass along the best wishes—which I was just asked to share—to all my compatriots," Duda said. He added that he would meet with Trump before he officially takes office as U.S. president.
Speaking on Monday (November 11) before departing for a climate summit in Azerbaijan, President Duda stated that he had spoken with U.S. President-elect Trump, marking their first conversation since the U.S. election. The call was initiated by Trump.
"I would like to pass along the best wishes—from President-elect Donald Trump of the United States—to all my compatriots," Duda said. "Just moments ago, I had a conversation with Mr. Trump, who called to extend his greetings for our national holiday. He also asked me to thank Poles for their support, particularly those living in the United States who voted in the election."
Duda: Trump promised to remember Poland
Duda shared that, during the conversation, Donald Trump mentioned he was aware that a large majority of Polish-Americans had voted for him and expressed his gratitude for their support.
"He said he remembers Poland and promises that he will always keep us in mind, both here and in the United States, in the best possible sense of the word. So I am passing along his warm wishes for our Independence Day and his thanks for the electoral support," Duda said.
"Many topics to discuss"
Duda shared that he and Trump agreed to meet before Trump’s official inauguration as U.S. President in January, though a specific date has not yet been set.
"Poland will soon assume the presidency of the European Union. Strengthening ties between the EU and the United States is one of our key priorities, and this is one of the topics I intend to discuss with the President-elect," Duda explained.
"We’ve outlined the main discussion points, and they’re clear: security issues, and economic cooperation between Poland and the United States," Duda noted.
The situation in Ukraine will also be a topic during Duda and Trump’s meeting. "The President-elect even asked me for my assessment of the situation. There are many topics for us to go over," the Polish president added.
Andrzej Duda also wrote a social media post in English, congratulating Trump on his "historic comeback and decisive victory in the presidential election." Duda wrote: "We also agreed to arrange for our meeting in the U.S. in the coming weeks."
