During Tuesday's hearing in the Council of the European Union, within the Article 7 procedure, representatives of the Polish government will call upon other EU member-states to close this procedure, Polish Press Agency (PAP) has learned from Polish diplomats.
During the hearing, Polish representatives are to underscore that as a result of a dialogue between Warsaw and Brussels, significant changes to the Polish legal system have been implemented. The changes concern, among other things, retirement age of judges, publication of the Constitutional Tribunal's rulings, as well as a procedure allowing Supreme Court judges to remain in active duty.
Poland will also attempt to convince that closing the Article 7 procedure is essential and in order to achieve that, as sources close to the government told PAP, dialogue and mutual understanding between the member-states and the European Commission are necessary.
That is why Polish representatives are expected to encourage the member-states to approach the procedure question "in an open way", that would facilitate reaching a solution acceptable for all sides.
According to Polish diplomats, it appears Poland will attempt to defend changes made in the Supreme Court, as well as to emphasise that the reform is in early stages, and if the need comes, further changes may follow. Poland also aims to defend other changes made to the judicial system.
