Stefan W., the man who killed the Mayor of Gdańsk Paweł Adamowicz shall be subjected to a four-week forensic-psychiatric observation, the District Court in Gdańsk ruled on Thursday.
The court session was held behind closed doors. Stefan W. was transferred to the courtroom from prison.
On 30th of January, the man was subjected to a single forensic-psychiatric examination. However, the experts weren't able to determine his competency to stand trial based on their findings and so they requested an extended observation.
Forensic-psychiatric observation can last between four and eight weeks. During its course, experts will examine the defendant's mental state, sanity and ability to recognise the gravity of the crime he committed on the 13th of January, as well as his ability to control his actions.
Both the prosecution and the defendant have the right to appeal against the court's decision.
On the 13th of January in Gdańsk, during the finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, the 27-year-old Stefan W. rushed onto the stage and stabbed Mayor Paweł Adamowicz with a knife.
The mayor was taken to hospital where he underwent a 5-hour-long operation. He died the next day. The post-mortem revealed, among other findings, three deep stab wounds - one close to the heart and two in stomach.
