BankTrack and Urgewald, non-governmental orgainisations (NGOs), attending the U.N. climate talks in Katowice, Poland on Wednesday published results of their research into banks and investors financing development of the coal industry around the world.
The NGO's presented results of the research which covers the period between January 2016 and September 2018.
Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, U.S. and British banks topped the NGOs "Dirty 30 Banks by Lending" list, Chinese banks dominated the "Dirty 30 Banks by Underwriting" and investors from U.S., Japan, Malaysia, South Korea and India featured on the top of the "Dirty 30 Institutional Investors" list.
The results of the NGO's research showed that $478 billion had been invested into the expansion of the coal industry between January 2016 and September 2018.
Heffa Schucking, Director of the German NGO Urgewald, told Reuters that global financial institutions undermined the Paris climate goals.
