British Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned about the growing humanitarian crisis due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Tuesday (March 1), saying refugee numbers could run into millions as people flee their homes. “"Putin is prepared to use barbaric and indiscriminate tactics against innocent civilians, to bomb tower blocks, to send missiles into tower blocks, to kill children, as we're seeing in increasing numbers," he stressed. Johnson met in Warsaw with his Polish counterpart Mateusz Morawiecki, who said at a press conference that the main goal of Poland's humanitarian efforts was preventing further bloodshed.
"When I spoke to (U.S.) President Biden last night, we focussed on the humanitarian emergency that is now beginning. Putin's invasion has already cost hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes, and we must prepare for an even larger outflow, perhaps in the millions," Johnson said from Warsaw.
"It's 126 hours since Vladimir Putin launched a war of aggression on our continent, tearing up every principle of civilised behaviour between states. He's held his war machine on the people of Ukraine, a fellow Slavic country. He's bombarded civilian targets. Fired rockets at blocks of flats. He's responsible for hundreds of civilian casualties, including growing numbers of children. And also, of course, for the deaths of many Russian and Ukrainian soldiers," the British prime minister said.
Johnson also said the UK would provide 220 million pounds in emergency aid for Ukraine.
"It's very hard to see how Vladimir Putin can be cast as a valid interlocutor given what he has done," he added.
"Vladimir Putin is prepared to use barbaric and indiscriminate tactics against innocent civilians, to bomb tower blocks, to send missiles into tower blocks, to kill children, as we're seeing in increasing numbers," British PM said.
"I say to Vladimir Putin and his regime, there is only one way out of this morass, and that is to stop the tanks, to turn back the tanks on their way to Kyiv, turn them round and take the path to peace," Johnson stressed.
Johnson arrived in Warsaw on Tuesday to hold talks with his Polish counterpart Mateusz Morawiecki.
First of all, today we want to demonstrate our solidarity with the Ukrainian nation, with Volodymyr Zelenskyi. Because over there they are fighting for freedom, for Ukraine's independence. We are fulfilling out humanitarian duties, commitments at the Polish-Ukrainian border," Morawiecki said.
Polish prime minister also said that more sanctions and strengthening the eastern flank of NATO are top priorities. "The sanctions package and strengthening of the eastern flank of NATO is what we need today and what we are focusing on," Morawiecki said.
"Today, we're confronted with dramatic events in Ukraine. Civilians, children, women, and seniors are dying. They are dying from bombs, missiles, bullets fired by Russian soldiers, sent over there by Putin," he said. "That's what we're mainly trying to prevent - bloodshed, hence our huge humanitarian efforts," he added.
The two leaders made the statements after holding bilateral talks on the situation in Ukraine.
