Grand larceny in the village of Chyby (Greater Poland Voivodeship). An antique bell has been stolen out of the belfry at the local church. Poznań Police are on the case, while the parson calls on anyone who has "recently noticed anything suspicious" to come forward.
An unknown perpetrator or perpetratorors have stolen an antique bell from the church in the Greater Poland's village of Chyby. The empty belfry was noticed on Wednesday (May 4), but Poznań Metropolitan Curia press office informed about the incident on Monday. Poznań Police are investigating the case, so far they have not informed at what stage the inquiry is.
The bell from the filial church of the Baranowo parish is made of gunmetal. It is ornamented with depictions of the Christ Crucified, as well as Madonna and Child. The bell was cast in 1853 by the C. Bresse foundry from Poznań. It weighs approx. 150 kilograms, has 60 centimetres in height and 50 in diameter.
"If anyone, especially local parishioners, have recently noticed anything suspicious, then please let me know. The church area was closed, so the burglars must have jumped over the fence," Baranowo parish priest Father Krzysztof Frąszczak appealed.
The parson has also called upon the thieves to return the bell, as it "has survived the turmoil of wars and times of war against the Church", and should continue to serve the faithful.
