The four time European champion in hammer throw Anita Włodarzyk has returned from Berlin in a flashy bus painted in gold, full of her fans and relatives. Residents of her hometown of Rawicz awaited Włodarczyk's arrival on the market square and sang songs to greet her.
On Sunday, Poland's Anita Włodarczyk won the gold medal in the hammer throw, the fourth gold of her career in the European championships, with a throw of 78.94 metres.
Her performance was applauded by numerous Polish fans, including a group of Włodarczyk's fan club in Rawicz, her parents and friends.
Fans from Rawicz went to Berlin in a special bus painted in gold and a big sign on the sides saying "Anita Włodarczyk".
"I knew that something is being prepared but didn't expect such a fantastic surprise," Anita Włodarczyk said at the town market in Rawicz. The champion of Europe admitted that she was very tired, however not with the sportsman's effort. The bus departed at 3 a.m. from Berlin and she only managed to get an hour of sleep.
"It was a very cheerful trip, we drank champagne but we behaved ourselves. Most of the people fell asleep because they had woken up very early on Sunday to get to Berlin. It was quite a challenge for them but they held on bravely. It was the first time in my career that I returned to Poland in a bus full of fans. I thanked everyone for organising this trip," Włodarczyk said.
