Three Polish soldiers taking part in the Anakonda 23 military drills in eastern Poland helped a civilian who had severy cut his arm with a chainsaw, damaging the ulnar artery. To express his gratitude for the army men who saved his life, the man wrote a commendation letter to the chief of their unit.
The accident happened on May 2 in a forest in eastern Poland, bue to the nature of the drills, the military would not reveal the exact location. We do, however, know exactly what happened as the man described it in the letter.
"In a forest between 3 and 4 p.m. I slipped over a working chainsaw and cut my right forearm and damaged my ulnar artery. I was bleeding heavily and turned to the military for help," the man wrote.
Press officer of the 18th Mechanized Division Major Przemysław Lipczyński said the injured man had known where the had been stationed.
"During the Anakonda drills we use civilian infrastructure. The people can see us. The injured man knew where the soldiers could be found, and it was close to his place of residence. He turned to them as he knew he would receive help," Maj. Lipczyński explained.
Three rescuers
The letter mentions Corporal Kamil Małysa - the only soldier the injured man was in contact with.
"It was only thanks to swift help and professional care from Corporal Kamil Małysa that my life and health were saved. Once again, together with my family, we would like express our thanks, respect, and gratitude for the help offered to me, for the civic and professional conduct worthy of a Polish soldier," we read.
Major Lipczyński stressed, however, that Private First Class Konrad Turos and Private Michał Laszuk had also tended to the injured man and that their conduct deserved the same kind of praise.
"All three went through first aid training. They had first aid kits on them and made proper use of them. They dressed the man's wound and passed him into the hands of the ambulance rescue team. A Medical Air Rescue helicopter also landed at the scene," the 18th Mechanized Division press officer added.
