A 37-year-old American has been caught trying to steal a fastening screw from the rail tracks at a historic unloading ramp in the former German concentration camp Auschwitz II Birkenau - the spokesperson for the Oświęcim police Małgorzata Jurecka announced.
"The man has been charged with an attempt to steal an object of special significance for culture. He is facing from 1 up to even 10 years in prison. The man admitted guilt and voluntarily asked for punishment," said Jurecka.
The American tried to steal the screw on Saturday evening during sightseeing the Auschwitz Museum. When trying to remove the object, he was spotted by another tourist who notified the Museum Guard.
The man was immediately detained and transported to the police station. Prosecutor's office in Oświęcim launched an inquiry into the incident. After being questioned, charged and voluntarily submitting to punishment, the American was released.
